Frequently Asked Questions: Training Program

I have never run 1 mile before, can I really train to run my first marathon?
Yes! It’s not a matter of prior experience, it's a matter of future commitment.  Many of our runners are first time marathoners, and some with very little running experience! It’s all a matter of training – building endurance can be easy and enjoyable when following a structured, progressive training program.

I have run several marathons before, and I’m trying to improve my time. Will this program help me?
Yes!  Unlike most marathon training programs, Good Run incorporates intense weekday sessions of tempo runs, intervals, and hill workouts.  For most of these workouts, Good Run uses formulas based on “race pace” to set specific goals for each runner.  For example, on interval day, it doesn’t matter if you can run a 5 minute mile or 15 minute mile, you’ll have a goal all your own that is sure to challenge your limits!

What if I can’t keep up with the rest of the group?
Don’t worry about your speed. Most of our workouts are designed to keep everyone in the group together regardless of different paces. We also have some trainers that will run with you – if you slow down, so will they, but they’ll also encourage you to keep going! Furthermore, for many runners, the goal is simply to finish a marathon. Although Good Run includes many speed developing workouts, this is just to build overall running fitness. The main goal is building endurance! The statement below perhaps best describes Good Run’s attitude on marathon participation:

“If you want to win something, run 100 meters.
If you want to experience something, run a marathon.”
-Emil Zatopek

Your speed is not a major concern, and shouldn’t affect your decision to pursue the marathon experience. We don’t want you to miss out, and we’re here for you!

How long is a marathon? Can I do a half marathon?
A marathon is 26.2 miles long. Most marathon events also offer a half marathon, 13.1 miles, on the same day. Good Run’s program prepares people for either a marathon or half marathon. Finishing either is a considerable accomplishment.

How long is the training program?
The training program is 18 to 22 weeks long depending on which marathon you decide to train for.

How often do we meet?
We meet every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Runners are also given a schedule of the easy/moderate runs to be done on your own outside the group workouts. No problem if you have to miss a day or two, you’ll get a schedule that allows you to keep up your training if unable to join the group workouts.

Why should I do this?
Because you want to!  People run marathons to get in shape, take vacations, for a person or cause they care about, or to challenge themselves.  Good Run is more than happy to offer you all the physiological benefits to the body as well as the benefits to the mind and spirit.  However, we don’t want to tell anyone they should run, but if you want to run, then all the reasons why are already there for you to discover and will likely become apparent to you in the doing… or in this case… the running.

Frequently Asked Questions: Metabolic Testing

Who should take this test and what can be learned?
The testing is for anyone who wants to train smarter to reach their fitness goals. Weekend warriors, elite athletes, reformed couch potatoes on a mission, and the routine exercisers who feel stuck on a plateau can all learn something about their fitness level and will receive specific training zone reports to help improve their training.

How is the Assessment Performed?
Test can be preformed on a treadmill, stationary bike (your own bike on a stand), or a rower. Testing begins at a very low intensity and then gradually increases to the point that you are working as hard as you can. Total length of the test is 12 to 15 minutes.
